KNOWN BY NAME

“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.” John 17:6 (ESV)

A teacher once told her students, “You might forget my lessons, but I’ll never forget your names.” There’s something powerful about being known personally. When Jesus said, “I have manifested Your name,” He meant He had revealed God’s very character to His disciples. In Scripture, a name represents nature. To manifest the Father’s name is to make His heart and holiness visible.
Jesus’ disciples weren’t random followers; they were given to Him by the Father. They were gifts of grace, chosen from the world and entrusted to the Son. Despite their weaknesses, Jesus described them as people who “have kept Your word.” Their obedience was imperfect but genuine, evidence that God had changed their hearts.
In this verse, we see both divine sovereignty and human responsibility: God calls us by name, and we respond in faith. Our identity and security rest not in our performance but in belonging to the One who knows us completely.

REFLECTION
●How does it encourage you to know that Jesus knows you by name?
●What does it mean for you to live in a way that reveals God’s character to others, especially as a member of The Hills?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS
●Thank God for calling you out of the world and making you His own.
●Ask Him to help you and the Shirley Hills congregation live in such a way that others see His character through your lives.
MONDAY, JANUARY 12
FROM THE WORLD TO THE WORD

“Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.”  John 17:6–7 (ESV)

When a young boy brought home a recycling project, he proudly said, “Trash is just stuff that needs a new purpose.” In many ways, that describes salvation. God takes what the world discards and gives it eternal purpose through Jesus Christ.
Jesus reminded the Father that His disciples had come from the world but now belonged to Him. They recognized that everything Jesus had: His authority, teaching, and power, came from God. This was the mark of true discipleship: they believed that Jesus was sent from the Father, not merely another prophet or teacher.
This passage reminds us that genuine faith always acknowledges God as the source. Everything we have: salvation, gifts, wisdom, breath comes from Him. When we recognize this truth, pride fades, and gratitude grows.

REFLECTION
●What area of your life or a ministry at SHBC do you need to re-acknowledge as a gift from God?
●How does understanding God’s ownership change how you use what He’s given?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS
●Thank God for rescuing you from the world and giving you purpose in Christ.
●Ask Him to help the Shirley Hills family handle every resource and opportunity with gratitude and humility.

THE WORDS OF LIFE

“For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.” John 17:8 (ESV)

Before cell phones and instant messaging, soldiers waited weeks for letters from home. When a letter finally arrived, they read it again and again; it was a lifeline of love and hope. God’s Word is that kind of message to His people.
Jesus gave His disciples the Father’s words, not opinions or guesses, but divine truth straight from heaven. They received His words, believed them, and understood that He was the One sent by God. This is what faith looks like: receiving, believing, and knowing. It’s not blind optimism but confidence rooted in revelation.
God still speaks through His Word. Every time you open Scripture, you hold a personal message from your Father. His words convict, comfort, and confirm who He is. The question isn’t whether God is speaking; it’s whether we are listening.

REFLECTION
●How seriously do you treat God’s Word as His personal message to you?
●What truth from Scripture has God been reminding you to trust lately that you can share with your Shirley Hills D-Group?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS
●Thank God for giving you His Word and the ability to understand it.
●Ask Him to help you and your church family receive His truth with a heart ready to believe and obey.

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS
●Thank Jesus for interceding for you at the right hand of the Father.
●Pray that you and our church family would walk each day with confidence in His continual care.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 15
A SHARED OWNERSHIP

“All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.” John 17:10 (ESV)

When a husband and wife share a joint bank account, what belongs to one belongs to the other. Jesus described a similar shared ownership between Himself and the Father. “All mine are yours, and yours are mine.” This statement highlights the unity of the Trinity; equal in essence, yet distinct in role.
Our salvation rests in that divine unity. Because we belong to the Father and the Son, we are eternally secure. No force can pull us from their grasp. And notice the closing phrase: “I am glorified in them.” Jesus is glorified when His people reflect His character and carry out His mission.
Your obedience brings glory to Christ. Every act of love, every word of faith, every step of trust reveals His beauty to a watching world.

REFLECTION
●How does belonging to both the Father and the Son shape your sense of security?
●What specific action could you take this week to glorify Jesus through your life within the Shirley Hills community?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS
●Thank God for holding your life securely in His hands.
●Ask Him to make the words and actions of every SHBC member today a reflection of Christ’s glory.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 16
PROTECTED BY HIS NAME

“Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.” John 17:11 (ESV)

A father locks his doors every night: not out of fear, but love. Protection flows from affection. Jesus’ prayer shows that same kind of care: “Holy Father, keep them in Your name.”
To be “kept” in God’s name means to be guarded by His power and preserved by His character. Jesus knew His followers would soon face persecution and division, so He asked the Father to protect them and unite them. Our unity is not built on preference or personality but on shared life in Christ.
The name of God represents His authority and reputation. To be kept in His name means that His protection is as sure as His promises. Even when life feels fragile, His hand is firm.

REFLECTION
●What does it mean to you to be “kept in His name”?
●How does God’s protection help you pursue unity with other Shirley Hills believers as we strive to be one?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS
●Thank God for the security of being protected by His name.
●Pray for unity and spiritual protection for your Shirley Hills church family.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 17
THE VALUE OF BELONGING

“All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.” John 17:10 (ESV)

A jeweler once said, “A diamond’s value is determined by whose hand it’s in.” The same is true of our lives. In the Father’s hand, we are priceless.
Jesus found joy and glory in those who belonged to Him. Though imperfect, the disciples reflected His work of grace. Likewise, our value doesn’t come from perfection but from possession: being His. When the world sees ordinary people changed by extraordinary grace, Christ is glorified.
We often look for worth in our work or relationships, but real value comes from knowing whose we are. You are God’s treasured possession, redeemed by His Son and kept by His Spirit.

REFLECTION
●Do you see your worth through the eyes of the One who owns you?
●How can you reflect Christ’s glory in your attitude, work, or relationships at The Hills today?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS
●Thank Jesus for making you His and giving you worth beyond measure.
●Ask God to use the Shirley Hills church body as a whole to be a reflection of His grace and glory to the community.
